South Coast Gave Me a Career Direction

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

James Fabella, Medical Assisting graduate from South Coast College in Orange, has a degree in economics but was not finding a satisfactory career path anywhere.  He was running an adult backetball league after graduating from college.

His mother suggested that he go into the medical area.  His wife who is a medical assistant at CHOC Hospital encouraged him to go to South Coast College because of the instructor, Ramy Seang, who had been her instructor.

James completed his internship at the Advanced Clinical Research Institute and was immediately hired there.  His job consists of working in an area where clinical trials and research studies are conducted.  He is excited about his position and the possibilities for upward mobility in the medical area.

In his exit interview with Jean Gonzalez, Director at South Coast College, he indicated that he was appreciative of the personal attention that he received and the knowledge that he gained while a student at South Coast College.  He indicated that he had no idea that being a medical assistant could take him into this type of work environment.

Following Twin Sister

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Kamryn Valadez, CSR, alumna from South Coast College on Orange, visited the new theory class and told them about her experiences since receiving her license in April 2008.

She has already reported a number of medical depositions and thanks teacher, Kathy Genevey, for the course that she completed in medical while a student at South Coast College.  Kamryn was also sent to court to report from her agency to report a trial.  She was assigned to the courtroom across from her twin sister Whitney.  One attorney even asked her whether she changed outfits!

Kamryn indicated that she has been asked to report a deposition in Florida and in Utah.  Pretty good start for the first three months of reporting!

Become A Court Reporter

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

As President of South Coast College in Orange, the question is often asked of me: ”Why become a court reporter?”  My response is “Why not become a court reporter?”  Where can you get a flexible lifestyle that will allow you to make the income that you choose to make.

Every day someone is telling me about someone who graduated as a court reporter from our school and is doing great.  We have graduates who have been out of school fewer than five years who own their own agencies.  We have graduates out of school fewer than five years who are working as official reporters in Los Angeles.

You need only check the starting salaries and benefit package for court reporters in the Los Angeles courts to know that these individuals have made a good choice to select court reporting as their career.  Some of our recent graduates who are working at Los Angeles Superior Court are Whitney Valadez, CSR; Vienna Nuyenn, CSR; Kris Tanoue, CSR; and George Dominguez, CSR.

Todd Olivas, CSR — Alumni, Agency Owner

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Todd Olivas, CSR, has developed quite a reputation as a public speaker, and he still has time to visit South Coast College where not too long ago he was a student.  Jean Gonzalez said that what she remembers most about Todd Olivas was his determination to succeed.  Whenever she would look out to the audience in her special practice classes, she would see Todd.  Todd is remarkable because he continued to pursue his court reporting studies while playing in a band and recording music, starting and executing his own website development company, and working in a small publishing company.  You can read more about Todd Olivas on his website.Court reporting

Celebrity Alumni — Michelle Pfeiffer

Friday, July 4th, 2008

What do Jim Pitton and Mallory Owens’s mother have in common.  They both attended our court reporting program at South Coast College with Michelle Pfeiffer.  Jim Pitton dropped out of school at 180 wpm because he had a family with four children and could not afford to continue.  Mallory’s mother Lisa became a CSR who later went to work with Paul Pay’s grandfather’s deposition agency.  Paul Pay’s uncle is an alumni.  When Jim Pitton’s daughter Mary decided to become a court reporter, Jim was inspired to return to school.  Mallory is following in her mother’s footsteps, and Paul is following in his uncle and grandfather’s footsteps and are students at South Coast College.  And everyone knows what happened to Michelle Pfeiffer.  Anyway, we are proud that she attended our college.  Just a note to Michelle.  Jim says that it is never too late to become a court reporter! Why not become a court reporter?
