Court Reporting Program.  Dustin Huffer who recently graduated from South Coast College and is awaiting the results of the CSR examination dropped by and was interviewed regarding his tenure at South Coast College and his interest in court reporting.

What interested you in becoming a court reporter?

I received an A.A. degree in General Education and couldn’t find a job.  I decided to work in retail in a minimum wage job.  I investigated various careers and saw that court reporting was something that interested me.

How did you find South Coast College?

I was living in Las Vegas and looked on the NCRA website and found South Coast College.  I looked at the website, and it looked like a great school.  In the meantime, I had a friend who was attending Chapman College, and I asked her if she knew where South Coast College is located.  She told me that it was right down the street from Chapman College.  I immediately called for an appointment to come in.

When you visited South Coast College, what made you decide that it was the college you wanted to attend?

Everything about the campus.  It is a small, intimate learning environment rather than a giant impersonal campus.  Everbody cares about the student and about the success of the student.

When you started your classes, did they meet your expectations?

They more than met my expectations.  The skill courses are taught in a way that enables a student to progress.  All the resource centers are totally available all day for students to use.  The academic courses have high standards.  All courses are taught by highly qualified instructors.

What surprised you most about South Coast College?

I would have to say that it is the friendly, supportive atmosphere and that the student body is highly motivated.  The faculty and staff are so interested in the success of the students.

Did you work while you were in school?

Before I qualified to take the CSR examination, I started doing steno-interpreting for hearing-impaired students at UC Irvine.

What courses did you steno-interpret?

Biological science.  It was a challenge, but I really enjoyed it.  I felt like I was getting a free college education.

What are your plans when you receive your CSR results?

I plan to continue CART (steno-interpreting) and broadcast captioning while at the same time I am doing depositions.

NOTE:  Dustin Huffer qualified to take the CSR test in 15 months.
